📘Program Overview

In the intensive care unit, professionals must frequently make accurate assessments and challenging judgments. The Certified Professional in Intensive Care Unit (CPICU) program builds the capabilities needed to care for critically ill patients.

Participants study respiratory failure, mechanical ventilation, and the fundamental requirements of critical-care patients, while also considering the ethical principles guiding intensive care — from admission to withdrawal of treatment — and its impact on patients' families.

The program develops the ability to critically evaluate haemodynamics and haemodynamic compromise across body systems, supporting proactive, evidence-based participation in clinical decision-making, with emphasis on the cardiovascular system, acute kidney injury, sepsis, and raised intracranial pressure.

🎯Program Rationale

  • Critical care demands rapid, high-stakes clinical judgment.
  • Structured training improves consistency and patient outcomes.
  • Ethical and family-centered considerations are integral to ICU practice.
  • Mastery of haemodynamics underpins safe critical-care decisions.

👥Target Audience

  • Intensive-care nurses and charge nurses
  • Physicians and residents rotating through critical care
  • Respiratory therapists
  • Rapid-response and emergency-care clinicians
  • Allied health professionals supporting critical care

Program Objectives

  • Apply the principles of mechanical ventilation and respiratory support.
  • Recognize and manage shock states and haemodynamic compromise.
  • Manage acute neurological, renal, and metabolic emergencies.
  • Integrate ethical reasoning into critical-care decision-making.
  • Participate effectively in multidisciplinary clinical decisions.

🏆Learning Outcomes

  • Manage mechanical ventilation and acute respiratory failure.
  • Assess and treat hypovolemic, cardiogenic, and septic shock.
  • Apply critical-care monitoring, including ultrasound where appropriate.
  • Manage neurological and endocrine emergencies in the ICU.
  • Support nutrition, sedation, and pain management for critically ill patients.
