๐Ÿ“˜Program Overview

The Certified Infection Prevention Officer (CIPO) is an operational, foundation-level program that equips frontline infection-prevention officers, link nurses, and unit champions to run the day-to-day work of an infection prevention and control (IPC) programme confidently and in line with national and international accreditation expectations.

It is positioned below the professional CICP certification: where CICP builds the full specialist, CIPO builds the capable operator who executes surveillance, interrupts transmission, supports reprocessing and environmental safety, and helps the unit stay survey-ready every day.

The curriculum is built around eight practical sessions spanning IPC leadership, risk and data, pathogens and outbreak readiness, breaking transmission, reprocessing and sterilization, the environment of care, the human element, and survey readiness through the tracer method.

๐ŸŽฏProgram Rationale

  • Most IPC work happens at the unit level and depends on competent officers, not only on a central specialist.
  • Healthcare-associated infections are largely preventable when transmission-based practices are applied consistently and monitored.
  • Accreditation surveyors test IPC through tracers on the floor, so every unit needs people who can show and sustain compliance.
  • A clear, operational foundation reduces variation and prepares officers to progress toward the professional CICP level.

๐Ÿ‘ฅTarget Audience

  • Infection-prevention officers, link nurses, and unit IPC champions
  • Staff nurses and charge nurses with IPC responsibilities
  • Sterilization / reprocessing (CSSD) and environmental-services supervisors
  • Quality and patient-safety coordinators supporting the IPC programme
  • Clinicians preparing to progress toward the professional CICP certification

โœ…Program Objectives

  • Describe how an IPC programme is organized and led, from national requirements to accreditation standards.
  • Collect and use basic surveillance data and apply simple risk thinking at unit level.
  • Apply standard and transmission-based precautions to interrupt the spread of key pathogens.
  • Support safe reprocessing, sterilization, and a safe environment of care as part of the IPC system.
  • Help the unit stay survey-ready and demonstrate IPC compliance during tracers.

๐Ÿ†Learning Outcomes

  • Run routine IPC tasks on the unit with confidence and consistency.
  • Record and interpret basic surveillance and hand-hygiene data.
  • Choose and apply the correct precautions for common pathogens and situations.
  • Recognize reprocessing, sterilization, and environmental risks and escalate them.
  • Show surveyors the evidence and practice that prove IPC compliance.

๐Ÿ“šProgram Structure

  • Module 1: Leading the IPC Programme โ€” From CBAHI to JCI
  • What an IPC programme is and how it is structured and governed
  • National requirements and the move toward international accreditation standards
  • Roles of the IPC officer, link nurse, and committee
  • Module 2: Risk, Surveillance and Data for Leaders
  • Basic IPC surveillance: what to count and why
  • Rates vs. counts and simple use of denominators
  • Hand-hygiene monitoring and feedback
  • Turning data into simple unit-level action
  • Module 3: Pathogens, Stewardship and Outbreak Readiness
  • Key healthcare pathogens and how they spread
  • Multidrug-resistant organisms and the officer's role in stewardship support
  • Early recognition of a possible outbreak and first actions
  • Module 4: Stopping Transmission โ€” Systems that Hold
  • Standard precautions as the baseline for every patient
  • Transmission-based precautions: contact, droplet, airborne
  • Correct use of personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Isolation, cohorting, and safe patient placement
  • Module 5: Reprocessing and Sterilization โ€” the Highest-Risk Chain
  • The decontamination cycle and the Spaulding classification
  • Cleaning, disinfection, and sterilization basics
  • Monitoring sterilization and handling single-use vs. reusable devices
  • Module 6: The Environment of Care as an IPC System
  • Environmental cleaning and high-touch surfaces
  • Water, ventilation, and construction-related IPC risks
  • Waste segregation and safe handling
  • Module 7: People โ€” Staff Health, Education and Evidence
  • Staff health: immunization, sharps safety, and exposure management
  • Educating and coaching frontline staff on IPC
  • Building the evidence that IPC practice is followed
  • Module 8: Survey Readiness โ€” Tracers, Evidence and the Roadmap
  • What surveyors look for during IPC tracers
  • Preparing the unit and the evidence file
  • Answering 'show me / tell me' questions with confidence
  • The officer's roadmap toward the professional CICP certification

๐Ÿ“Assessment & Certification

  • Module knowledge checks
  • Precautions and PPE scenario exercise
  • Unit IPC tracer / readiness walkthrough
  • Final written examination (passing score 60%)

๐Ÿš€Capstone / Practical Project

Perform a simple IPC readiness check on your own unit: review hand-hygiene and surveillance data, verify precautions and reprocessing practice, identify the top gaps, and prepare a short action list the unit can act on before a survey.
